It’s been a busy year for Cornwall roofing company Summit Roofing Solutions. High-profile projects include natural slate re-roofs in exclusive areas of Treloyhan Park, Carbis Bay, a large re-roof project for Barclays Bank, Helston, and many new-build installations.
Because of a heavy workload, business owner Adam Palmer has taken on three new workers in the past 12 months. And what is key to the business’s success, according to Adam, is his decision to take on two apprentices.
Training staff, the Summit way
‘There are all sorts of good reasons to take on apprentices from a local community point of view,’ says Adam. ‘And I do believe in doing my bit there. But, actually, for me taking on apprentices is a very good business decision. Because I’m training them from the very start, I get them to carry out work to exactly the high standards I expect.’
Adam’s 2014 apprentices, Ashley Ellis and Kane Stephenson, are joined by another new employee Gary Bell, a highly experienced roofer with 12 years in the trade.
‘It’s pretty much a perfect mix,’ says Adam. ‘Two apprentices to train our way, and another experienced team member to help me oversee our high standards or workmanship. We’re well set for 2015.’
